SAN LEANDRO -- The American Legion is sending national and state teams to a special service session here Feb. 20-22 to provide information on veterans benefits and coordinate a membership drive.
"A lot of veterans sign up for the American Legion, and they're assigned to Post 1000 in California. It's a floating post; it's not a real post," said Ron Galvan, area membership chairman for the group. "The idea is to try to get them into a regular post."
Any veteran with questions about benefits or other military-related questions can speak to a service officer, who will be available all day Feb. 21.
The event is being held in San Leandro, but it includes veterans in Contra Costa County and San Francisco, Galvan said. Those living in the San Leandro and Oakland areas will be encouraged to join Post 117 in San Leandro.
The veteran service campaign takes place 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 20 and 21, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 22. The service officer will be on hand 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 21.
The campaign takes place at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1105 Bancroft Ave.
Any veteran who served in the military during wartime can join the American Legion, Galvan said.
