BAY POINT -- An 80-year-old man died Tuesday morning during a one-alarm house fire, authorities said.
Crews were called to the 80 block of Mountain View Avenue at 9:06 a.m. after a woman who owns a house next door saw smoke coming from the roof, said Fire Inspector Steve Aubert of the Contra Costa Fire Protection District. The woman knocked on the door to the home but did not receive an answer.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke in the living room and attacked the blaze, Aubert said, fully extinguishing it by 9:20 a.m. Crews then removed the man, identified as James Campbell, from the house. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Aubert said.
Inspectors are still trying to determine how the fire started, and Aubert said the house was not equipped with a smoke detector. Campbell lived alone, authorities said. His autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
