SAN LEANDRO -- The story of abolitionist Sojourner Truth will be told through an interactive performance Thursday at the Main Library.

Storyteller and educator Jamie P. Myrick will portray the activist, who was born a slave but escaped to freedom. She changed her name from Isabella Baumfree to Sojourner Truth and continued to fight for the rights of African-Americans and women. She died in 1883.

Through her performances, Myrick tells stories of women who helped shape America. She also is a teaching consultant, theater instructor and teacher in West Contra Costa Unified School District.

The free event begins at 7 p.m. Thursday 300 Estudillo Ave.
