MARTINEZ -- Authorities on Friday identified a teenager who died in crash while apparently speeding on eastbound Highway 24 as 17-year-old Anthony Grosso, of Danville.

Speed appears to be a factor in the one-car crash, which happened when Grosso lost control of an Isuzu Impreza midway between the Central Lafayette and Pleasant Hill road exits, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses said the car was traveling more than 100 mph when it drifted and smashed into an embankment. CHP Lt. Steve Perea said the car hit a traffic sign and continued down the embankment before coming to a stop. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Grosso was alone in the car.
