An 81-year-old Orinda man who was hiking in the snow alone on Sunday afternoon collapsed and later died, a spokesman from the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's office said Monday.¿

Ulrich Luscher was found facedown in the snow by other hikers, who performed CPR on him for about 20 minutes before a helicopter arrived and transported him to the Keenwild Fire Station on Highway 243 in Idyllwild, where he was pronounced dead at 4:39 p.m., said Sgt. Brent Sechrest of the coroner's office.

Luscher was hiking on the San Jacinto Peak Trail near Palm Springs. At 2:30 p.m. rescue crews got a call about an older man down in the San Jacinto Wilderness, about three miles from the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway station. A rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene, Sechrest said.

Public records showed that Luscher had most recently founded an engineering consultant firm in Orinda. It was not known if Luscher had family in the area.

Sechrest said the cause of death has not been determined, but foul play has been ruled out.
