PLEASANT HILL -- A family of five escaped without injury after a one-alarm fire burned their home's attic and roof early Thursday, a Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesman said.

The fire began in a travel trailer in the driveway of a home in the 700 block of Slater Avenue around 12:30 a.m., Fire Inspector George Laing said. The blaze then spread to a tree near the home and from there to the attic.

Two adults and three children living in the single-story house were outside when crews arrived. Firefighters needed about 40 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from the inside and nobody was injured, Laing said. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, although it was not considered suspicious, Laing said.

The Red Cross helped the family to find temporary housing.
