SAN LEANDRO -- Police have arrested a 19-year-old Vallejo man they say caused a two-car head-on collision Saturday night that left the driver of the other vehicle dead and passenger injured.

Police responded to the crash on East 14th Street between Davis and Chumalia streets around 10:45 p.m. and immediately started giving first aid, Lt. Robert McManus said.

After investigating the collision, it was determined that the driver, Jesus Antonio Gonzalez, was headed north on 14th at a "very high rate of speed" and crossed into oncoming traffic near the intersection of Davis, McManus said. Gonzalez was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and is being guarded by police at a local hospital while being treated for injuries.

The identity of the driver, a 32-year-old San Leandro man, has not been released, as the Alameda County Coroner's office is trying to contact next of kin. The 56-year-old passenger from San Leandro is being treated for non life-threatening injuries, police said.
