CASTRO VALLEY -- All eastbound lanes of Interstate 580 were shut down between Redwood Road and Strobridge Avenue for about 90 minutes early Sunday morning following a shooting on the highway, police said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident was reported at about 3:30 a.m. and prompted the closure. A team of investigators continued to look into the incident Sunday afternoon.

Someone in a sedan, possibly a Pontiac, pulled up alongside the victim's BMW and fired multiple shots, CHP spokesman Eric Thomas said.

The victim sustained a shot to the leg and was transported to Eden Medical Center, while the suspect fled the scene, Thomas said.

The two parties may have known each other, Thomas said, and noted that the victim is cooperating with law enforcement.

The road was reopened by 5 a.m.
