SAN LEANDRO -- An afternoon residential burglary resulted in a high-speed police chase and a car crash Tuesday afternoon in downtown San Leandro, police said.

About 12:10 p.m. officers were notified about a home burglary that took place on Karol Way, Lt. Richard DeCosta said.

A witness told police that the burglary suspect fled the area in a vehicle toward East 14th Street. But when officers located the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic enforcement stop on it, the driver sped away from officers and led them on a short pursuit in the downtown area, DeCosta said.

The vehicle crashed into a parked car on Castro Street near Williams Street and the suspect fled on foot into the residential area just south of the intersection.

Officers set up a perimeter around that area and conducted a yard search, but did not locate the suspect.
