HAYWARD -- A crackdown on illegal street racing ended in more than 100 citations being written to drivers and spectators in Hayward on Thursday, police said.
A crowd of about 100 cars and 200 people from as far as Sacramento had gathered at about 11 p.m. on Connecticut Street in an commercial and industrial part of town that is one of a few popular street racing sites in Hayward, Sgt. Mark Ormsby said.
Authorities led by Sgt. Ray Sisson of Hayward police blocked off the street and wrote 178 citations, Ormsby said. The crackdown is part of a larger operation dubbed "Operation No More Street Racing."
"Someone's going to get hurt. We are going to go out there and enforce this anytime we can," Ormsby said.
