CONCORD -- A 19-year-old Pleasant Hill man accused of leading police on a chase Saturday night was arrested after crashing a car and trying to escape, police said.

Concord police officers ran a check on a 1996 white Honda Accord after seeing it traveling eastbound on Highway 4 around 11:25 p.m. Saturday, according to Lt. Ivan Menchaca.

They tried to pull it over after finding the car had been stolen out of Walnut Creek, but the driver accelerated and eventually exited the freeway, police said.

The Honda was on Oliveira Road near Port Chicago Highway when the driver lost control and hit a curb, police said.

Both the driver and a passenger in the car tried to flee, but a police dog helped run down the driver, who was not identified.

Police booked him into County Jail in Martinez on suspicion of unlawfully taking a vehicle and theft. The passenger in the car tried to walk away from arriving officers and also was taken into custody. Police did not say whether charges will be filed against the passenger.
