CONCORD -- An elderly man didn't back down when he ran into a pair of burglars in his home Thursday, chasing them out of the house and into hiding, police said.
The 71-year-old resident of the home in the 1600 block of Nuala Street ended up in the hospital because of his efforts. Concord police Lt. Ivan Menchaca said the man fell during the chase and suffered cuts and scrapes to his legs and face. As a precaution, a relative took him to a hospital where he was checked out, Menchaca said.
The two burglars have not been arrested. They were inside the home when the resident arrived around 11:10 a.m. and fled in an unknown vehicle.
The confrontation ended without violence, but Menchaca said the homeowner's actions weren't recommended.
"Chasing after suspects can be very dangerous," he said in an email, adding that any resident who runs into a burglar should "follow all directions by the suspects in an effort to avoid injury."
Police also recommend that residents avoid fighting intruders and take good visual notes that can be shared when calling 911 after the burglar leaves. They also recommend creating a home environment that deters the crime in the first place.
"Install an alarm system, cut down any bushes or plants in the front yard that provide area for concealment (and) make sure you have good lighting at night," Menchaca said. "Establish neighborhood watch groups and always be aware of your surroundings."
Police are investigating whether the burglary was connected to a suspicious incident around the corner, in the 900 block of Duar Drive, about 25 minutes earlier, Menchaca said. Two men knocked on the door of a home there around 10:45 a.m., and when the resident answered, the pair acted suspiciously and offered a name of the resident they thought lived there.
The two men seen on Duar Drive were described as either white or light-skinned Hispanic, between 18 and 20 years old with small frames, wearing black shirts and jeans. One of them identified himself by name to the resident, Menchaca said.
In the Nuala Street burglary, both men were between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, one with a thick build and one with a medium build. One wore a dark, possibly khaki shirt. One was white, and one was Hispanic, police said.
