A Vallejo man was arrested for trying to steal his mother's car just hours after escaping serious injury after being shot in the head during a robbery, a Vallejo Police Department spokesman said.

The 23-year-old man reported being robbed at gunpoint by three black men in the alley behind the gas station at 500 block of Tennessee Street at about 11:50 p.m. Sunday, Lt. Kevin Bartlett said.

"He reported that they took his backpack, with an iPad and phone in it," Bartlett said. "One suspect shot him in the side of the head, a grazing wound, a minor injury."

The man was taken to Walnut Creek's John Muir Medical Center, but walked away without receiving treatment, Bartlett said.

"His mother came to pick him up in a van, and brought him back to Vallejo, and then he tried to steal the van from his mother because she wouldn't let him borrow it."

The man was arrested in the 200 block of Tennessee Street about noon Monday, Bartlett said. There is no description of the suspects and the victim was "generally uncooperative, he said.

"We will get him medically cleared and book him into jail," Bartlett said.
