A motorcyclist and the driver of another vehicle went to the hospital Tuesday in separate wrecks about 11 miles apart in Contra Costa County, wreaking havoc with freeway and side-road traffic for much of the morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

The first wreck involved a van and two other cars, initially reported to be a white Volkswagen Jetta and a white Toyota, CHP Officer Kevin Bartlett said. That crash happened at 8:06 a.m. near the Acalanes Road exit on westbound Highway 24 in Lafayette and sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries he said.

The motorcyclist was injured less than an hour later in a wreck that also involved two trucks, Bartlett said. That crash happened at 8:52 a.m. on southbound Interstate 680 near the Monument Boulevard exit in Pleasant Hill, Bartlett said. The CHP did not have information immediately on the condition of the motorcyclist or the truck drivers.
