Driver is held in suspected DUI crash

A 21-year-old man driving a Corvette that smashed into a pole near the Claremont Hotel early Friday was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and hit-and-run, police said.

The single-car wreck, which happened around 2:20 a.m. on Tunnel Road, critically injured a passenger in the car and shut down the road -- an artery connecting highways 24 and 13 -- at the start of Friday's commute, Berkeley police spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said.

Tunnel Road remained closed in the eastbound direction until just before 11:30 a.m. The road was closed in both directions until around 7 a.m.

The passenger, a 24-year-old man, was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he was in critical condition. Coats said the man's injuries were so severe that a fatal-accident investigation team was called to the scene.

The driver, who has not been identified, tried to flee on foot after the wreck, police said, but officers found him a short distance from the crash.
