A couple from Solano County was killed late July 4 on Highway 50 when their motorcycle was hit but a woman who the California Highway Patrol says was driving drunk.
According to the CHP, Richard J. Schwab, 47, of Dixon, and Kelly C. Schwab, 48, of Vacaville, were riding westbound on Highway 50 near Twin Bridges around 11:44 p.m. when they were hit by a mini van.
The CHP said the 2001 Chevrolet Astro was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 at a high rate of speed. The van "failed to maintain its lane position, and crossed over into the opposing westbound lane," the CHP report noted. The van then collided with the 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle that the Schwabs were on.
Upon impact, both motorcycle riders were ejected and sustained fatal injuries.
The driver of the van, identified at Megan D. Olivia, 28, of South Lake Tahoe, was uninjured in the collision. Officers evaluated her on the scene regarding her sobriety and arrested her on suspicion of drunken driving.
She was booked into El Dorado County Jail on suspicion of felony DUI, and vehicular manslaughter.
The Lake Tahoe News is reporting that her bail has been set at $135,000.
