FREMONT -- A suspected drunken driver flipped a car and slammed into a telephone pole on Fremont Boulevard in the city's Northgate neighborhood late Tuesday, forcing police to shut down a portion of the roadway for nearly nine hours.
Officers were dispatched about 10:15 p.m. to Fremont Boulevard between Ferry Lane and Decoto Road after a passerby dialled 911 to report the solo-car crash, police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.
Arriving officers found a man, standing outside a silver Hyundai Sonata, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Bosques said. Police identified the driver as Mansoor Jan, 33, of Fremont. He was taken to Washington Hospital to be checked for injuries, Bosques said.
Jan reportedly lost control of the Sonata, crashed and sheared a telephone pole, which was in danger of falling over, Bosques said.
Police shut down Fremont Boulevard in both directions in order to investigate the wreck and then alerted AT&T about the damaged pole.
"We had to sit on the pole until AT&T could respond at 5:30 a.m. to repair it," Bosques said.
The roadway was reopened to traffic just before 7 a.m., Bosques said.
