Q Several weeks ago several of us wrote to you asking if the lane striping on Highway 101 north was temporary. You assured us that it was. But the essence of the question was missed. We were writing so that a permanent error was not made. Based on the lane tags that have been placed on the road, it appears that the intent is to persist with the error.
I am referring to the stretch between the San Antonio and Oregon/Embarcadero exits. It appears as if they intend to have a very wide left shoulder, a nonexistent right shoulder and no turnoff lane. Though not evident yet, I suspect there will be similar issues on the southbound lane. Poor lane striping will NEGATE much of the potential benefit of this 3-plus-year project.
A The current striping is temporary. Starting Thursday, Caltrans will begin re-striping the road for the final lane configuration. When done next month, the wide median shoulder will be transformed into a second carpool lane, with an auxiliary lane between the San Antonio and Oregon/Embarcadero exits.
Q When will the metering lights be working on Highway 101 in San Mateo County between Highway 92 and the San Francisco County line? The work to install them was completed some time ago.
A The northbound meters could be turned on at the end of October, while the southbound meters won't be working until February.
Q I live near the intersection of Winchester Boulevard and I-280 and have seen the same lettering difference that another reader saw on the overhead street signs. At first I too thought it was a different font, but on closer inspection one can see that it is just the paint on the letters peeling off in a very aesthetically pleasing way. ... The gothic-looking sign on Winchester is a result of poor workmanship when the sign was made. There are several signs in that area that look like this. The paint has cracked and is slightly peeling, causing little spikes at the tops and bottoms of the letters, thus the appearance of gothic-like letters. ... I like this look on the signs at Winchester.
Greg Finley, Diane Hughes, Deb A. and more
A I like it, too. There's a similar gothic look to a sign on Saddle Rack Street off Race Street in San Jose.
Q I recently got a Nissan Leaf, and my HOV lane stickers came, and now I'm wondering: Can I use the carpool lane on onramps while driving solo?
A You sure can.
Q Why are there BART trains wrapped in promotions for the Monterey Bay Aquarium? Does BART have a partnership with the aquarium, when the trains do not go anyway near there?
A While it is true BART doesn't serve the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the aquarium is funding a program to provide free rides for school field trips to Bay Area students during the upcoming school year at sites BART serves. There is no cost to BART or taxpayers.
