OAKLAND -- An East Oakland home was gutted by fire Saturday afternoon, but the three people inside escaped safely, fire officials said.

Oakland fire firefighters responded at 4:30 p.m. to the one-alarm blaze in the 10900 block of Novelda Drive near the Oakland-San Leandro border. It took crews 35 minutes to extinguish the fire, said Battalion Chief Adrian Sheppard.

Officials aren't sure what caused the fire or where it started in the two-bedroom, one-bathroom house. The home's contents were destroyed, Sheppard said. The home was not habitable and the family was referred to the American Red Cross for emergency housing assistance.

The cost of damages to the home was not yet known.
