One of the most powerful unions in Oakland has endorsed former school board member Dan Siegel as its top choice in the mayor's race, Siegel announced Monday.

SEIU Local 1021, which is Oakland's largest municipal employees union, also made Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan its second choice and Mayor Jean Quan its third choice.

Oakland uses a ranked-choice election system in which voters rank their top three choices for mayor.

"I am grateful for the confidence that the members of Local 1021 have expressed in our campaign and its potential for real change in Oakland," Siegel said in a prepared statement.

Kaplan's campaign manager Jason Overman called the union's support a huge endorsement and said "it shows the strength and momentum of our campaign."

Quan's campaign co-chairman Michael Colbruno said the mayor expected Siegel, an attorney, to get the top endorsement based on his past legal work for SEIU.

Colbruno said Quan "is a former SEIU organizer and looks forward to continuing her work with them in fighting for better working conditions, fair wages, and economic justice."
