SAN LEANDRO -- A man was shot in the leg outside the Bayfair Center shopping mall Monday morning following an argument in a shoe store there, police said.
The victim's name, age and city of residence were not released. He was taken to an area hospital by another shopper who was at the mall. No arrests had been made Monday afternoon. The gunman apparently drove away after the shooting, accompanied by another man and two women.
A description of the getaway car was not released.
The man was shot about 10:45 a.m. in a parking lot on the east side of the mall at 15555 East. 14th St., police said.
A motive for the shooting was not immediately known and police have not released the name of the store where the argument started. Police said it appears the shooter followed the victim from the store and shot him, said San Leandro police Lt. Rick DeCosta.
The victim's condition was not immediately known Monday afternoon, but his wound was not considered life threatening, police said.
No one else was injured.
Police have interviewed at least two people who said they saw the victim after the suspect fired several rounds from a black handgun, one of which struck the victim in the leg.
It was not known if the victim and the shooter knew each other. The shooting appears to be an isolated incident, with the victim the intended target, DeCosta said. Anyone with information should call police at 510-577-2740.
