DANVILLE -- A man who allegedly tried to swipe copper wire from San Ramon Valley High School early Tuesday was foiled by alert neighbors, police said.
Police arrested 41-year-old Damon Carthen, of Alamo, shortly after they were called to the football field at the high school at 3:53 a.m. by neighbors who reported hearing voices and noise coming from the bleachers, Police Chief Steve Simpkins said. An officer then found Carthen in possession of an undisclosed quantity of copper wire
Police determined the wire came from one of the light standards on the bleachers near the visiting team sidelines. Officers arrested Carthen on suspicion of grand theft and probation violation. Carthen was being held without bail at the County Jail in Martinez.
"This incident exemplifies the importance of partnership between our community and the police department," Simpkins said. "It also send a reminder to those who intend to come to our town and steal (that) there's a strong chance you will be caught."
