Deer Valley wins Vontoure Classic

  • The Deer Valley High boys basketball team won the Chris Vontoure Classic with a 53-38 victory over host De La Salle in the championship game on Dec. 8. The Wolverines jumped out to an 13-0 lead and never looked back. Senior guard Kendall Smith led the team with 28 points and was named Player of the Game.

    Los Medanos takes sixth in Modesto

  • The Los Medanos men's basketball team hit 38 three-point shots in the first three games of the Modesto Junior College tournament Dec. 6-8, but were held to just two in the first half of the fifth place game against Cuesta, which defeated Los Medanos 89-70 on Dec. 8. Marquis Arron led the Mustangs with 13 points.

    Pirates impress at Tri-Valley Challenge

  • The Pittsburg High boys soccer team wrapped up the Tri-Valley Challenge with a 2-1 record. That included a 5-3 win over College Park on Dec. 5 and a 3-1 loss to Monte Vista on Dec. 8. Pittsburg had a 2-2 overall record entering this week and will host College Park on Dec. 15.

  • Deer Valley vs. Pacific Hills-West Hollywood, boys basketball, Dec. 14 -- The Wolverines will head to St. Joseph High in Santa Maria to face off against Pacific Hills in the National Prep Classic.

  • Liberty, Heritage at Don Nelson Classic, boys basketball, Dec. 14 -- Both the Lions and Patriots will travel to Dublin High to take part in the Don Nelson Classic from Dec. 13-15. Liberty played Concord in its first game Dec. 13, after this newspaper went to press.

  • Los Medanos at Monterey Christmas Classic, women's basketball, Dec. 14-15 -- The Mustangs hope to get their season going in the right direction when they play in the Monterey Christmas Classic. Los Medanos, which had won just one of its first seven games, opened the tournament Dec. 13 against Diablo Valley.

  • Kendall Smith, Deer Valley boys basketball -- Smith led the Wolverines to a victory over De La Salle at Chris Vontoure Classic, scoring 28 points on 12 of 17 shooting.

  • Junior Basmagian, Liberty boys basketball -- Basmagian scored 18 points, including two 3-pointers, to lead the Lions past Tracy 57-37 in the semifinals of the Stonebarger Tournament on Dec. 7. Basmagian also scored 11 points in 73-64 loss to Roseville in the Dec. 8 championship game.
