BRENTWOOD -- To retain some "institutional knowledge" on the East Contra Costa Fire District Board of Directors, the Brentwood City Council opted to keep Councilman Joel Bryant on as a council liaison in addition to appointing three new Brentwood board members and one alternate.

At Tuesday night's council meeting, Brentwood residents Stephen Smith, Greg Cooper and Joe Young were appointed to the board. The selected alternate was Anthony Bargiacchi, who will officially become the fourth member as Bryant phases out of the position over time.

Bargiacchi said that he was eager to learn that "institutional knowledge" that the four council members had gained while serving on the board since 2009. The four former board members were Bryant, Bob Brockman, Erick Stonebarger and Steve Barr.

"I understand there is a history that someone my age may not fully understand," he said. "The biggest thing is education and promoting our fire department."

Bryant will remain on the board for up to a year. In total, 11 residents applied for the fire board appointment.

"We had such a strong group with a broad base of understanding," Stonebarger said.

The three new appointees will officially become Brentwood board representatives for the district next month. The fire board has nine members with four from Brentwood, three from Oakley and two from neighboring unincorporated communities.

"The board being more independent makes sense," Barr said.
