Mustangs earn first conference win

  • Nick Blount had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Los Medanos College men's basketball team to a 68-59 win over Solano on Jan. 12, as the Mustangs improved to 1-3 in the Bay Valley Conference. Blount had four three-pointers in the win and teammate Patrick Lefiti added 14 points and nine assists.

    Wolverines start BVAL play on right foot

  • The Deer Valley High girls basketball team began Bay Valley Athletic League play Jan. 11 with a 52-40 win over host Pittsburg. Sabrea Coleman led the Wolverines with 21 points and seven assists, as Deer Valley won its second straight game. The Wolverines have won or shared in the last six BVAL championships.

    Patriots cruise to two league victories

  • The Heritage High girls soccer team started BVAL play with a pair of convincing wins. The Patriots beat Deer Valley 5-1 on Jan. 8 and Pittsburg 6-0 on Jan. 10 to improve their overall record to 7-3-1. Heritage is looking to win its second league championship in three years.

    Freedom edges rival Liberty in BVAL dual

  • The Freedom High wrestling team recorded seven victories, including five by pinfall, to help edge Liberty 37-32 in a Jan. 9 BVAL dual meet. Junior Ricky Coster, who finished fifth in the North Coast Section championships last season at 120 pounds, won his match via pinfall at 126 pounds. Liberty's Austin Solari, who took third in the NCS meet last season at 126 pounds, won his match at 145 pounds 16-7.

  • Deer Valley vs. Newark Memorial, boys basketball, Jan. 21, 7:30 p.m. -- The Wolverines should be tested when they face the Cougars at the Martin Luther King Classic at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley. The game is the last of six on the day.

  • Antioch at Pittsburg, boys soccer, Jan. 22, 6 p.m. -- The Panthers, who have lost just once in their last nine games entering this week, play at Pirate Stadium in a game between two of the BVAL's best teams.

  • Demi Gonis, Heritage girls soccer -- The sophomore scored three goals, all in the first half, to help lead the Patriots to a 6-0 win over Pittsburg on Jan. 10.

  • Elsa Ross, Freedom girls basketball -- The senior guard had 21 points and eight assists to help the Falcons defeat Antioch 49-21 on Jan. 11.
