Freedom shuts out Liberty

  • The Freedom High girls soccer team defeated Liberty 1-0 on Jan. 17, recording its eighth shutout of the season. The Falcons' goal was scored by Selena Gonzalez, and the defense was anchored by Cathy Cook, Anna Carter and freshmen goalie Tess Harrington. The win kept the Falcons tied atop the Bay Valley Athletic League standings with Heritage, with each team owning 3-0-1 records in league play.

    Deer Valley fends off Heritage

  • The Deer Valley High boys basketball team improved to 13-3 and 2-0 in BVAL play with a 82-74 win over Heritage on Jan. 15. The Wolverines held off the visiting Patriots thanks to strong play from Kendall Smith, Nzuzi Webster and Marcus Lee. Deer Valley finished the week with a 75-12 win over Antioch and a 97-92 loss to Sheldon-Sacramento, one of the top teams in the state.

  • Heritage at Freedom, boys basketball, Jan. 25, 5:30 p.m. -- Heritage will try to get back on top to the top of the BVAL standings with a win. Freedom (3-0 BVAL) will try to remain undefeated in Bay Valley Athletic League play.

  • Deer Valley at Freedom, girls basketball, Jan. 29, 7 p.m. -- Deer Valley will try to shutdown the high powered offense of Freedom.

  • Freedom at Heritage, girls soccer, Jan. 31, 6 p.m. -- Two of the top teams in the Bay Valley Athletic League will face off.

  • Jorge Cendejas, Freedom boys soccer -- Cendejas scored three goals before halftime in a 3-0 win over Liberty on Jan. 17.

  • Joey Jones, De La Salle soccer -- Jones scored both of the Spartans' goals in a 2-1 victory over Richmond on Jan. 19. His goal in the 59th minute was the game winner.

  • Marcus Lee, Deer Valley boys basketball -- Lee had 20 points, grabbed 21 rebounds, blocked seven shots and dished out six assists in an 82-74 win over Heritage on Jan. 15.

  • Ali Ramirez, Heritage girls basketball -- Ramirez had 14 points and eight rebounds in a key win over Deer Valley to take sole possession of the Bay Valley Athletic standings.

  • Kendall Smith, Deer Valley boys basketball -- Smith had a game-high 25 points and 11 assists in a big win over Bay Valley Athletic League rival Heritage.
