Freedom basketball starts off strong

  • The Freedom High boys basketball team improved to 4-0 in the Bay Valley Athletic League with a 77-60 win over Heritage 77-60 on Jan. 24. The Falcons won the game with a swarming press defense and were led by Elliot Smith, who had a game-high 24 points.

    Pittsburg soccer team rolling along

  • The Pittsburg High boys soccer team defeated Albany 6-0 on Jan. 26 for its sixth consecutive win. With the victory, Pittsburg improved to 10-2-4 overall. Last week, the Pirates also defeated Freedom 5-3 on Jan. 24 and Antioch 4-0 on Jan. 22. During the three game stretch, they out scored opponents 15-3. Javier Valencia, Esteban Berumen and Israel Murgia combined for nine of those goals.

    Heritage soccer team continues torrid pace

  • The Heritage High girls soccer team defeated Liberty 1-0 on Jan. 22 and battled Deer Valley to a 1-1 tie on Jan. 24. The Patriots have gone undefeated in their past seven matches, four of which were shutouts, thanks to a strong defense that allowed just three goals over the seven game stretch.

  • Los Medanos at Marin, men's basketball, Feb. 1, 7:30 p.m. -- Los Medanos looks to get into the win column once again when it travels to College of Marin.

  • Richmond at Pittsburg, boys soccer, Feb. 2, 6 p.m. -- Pittsburg will host a tough nonleague opponent in Richmond, which has won five of its last six games.

  • Deer Valley at Heritage, boys basketball, Feb. 5, 7 p.m. -- Heritage looks to avenge an 82-74 loss to the Wolverines on Jan. 15.

    Stars of the week

  • Marcus Lee, Deer Valley boys basketball -- Lee led Deer Valley to wins over Newark Memorial (Jan. 21) and Sheldon-Sacramento (Jan. 19). Throughout the two games he accumulated 50 points, 32 rebounds and 12 blocks.

  • Elliot Smith, Freedom boys basketball -- Smith had a 24 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks in a key 77-60 win over Heritage on Jan. 24.

  • Kendall Smith, Deer Valley boys basketball -- Smith had a double-double in a loss to Sheldon-Sacramento. He racked up 31 points and dished out 12 assists.
