Deer Valley now alone in first after big win
The Deer Valley High boys basketball team took sole possession of first place in the Bay Valley Athletic League after defeating Freedom 76-73 on Jan. 29. Entering this week, the Wolverines were 6-0 in league play and the Falcons were 5-1. The two teams will meet again on Feb. 21.-- Nick Roth
Freedom girls win pivotal game
The Freedom High girls soccer team defeated Heritage 3-2 on Jan. 31 to take over sole possession of first place in the BVAL. Early in the second half, Clarissa Diaz scored to give Freedom a 3-1 lead, and goalie Tess Harrington had seven saves to hold off Heritage. Pittsburg shines at NCS wrestling meet
The Pittsburg High girls wrestling team finished third at the NCS Championships held at Pittsburg High from Feb. 1-2. The Pirates finished with 112 points, and will be sending two wrestlers to the state championships at Lemoore High from Feb. 22-23. In the 235-pound weight division, Pittsburg's Samantha Cruz placed first and in the 98-pound division, Camille Caoile took third. Antioch's Courtney Rouse will also be competing in the state championships, as she finished third in the 165-pound division.-- Nick Roth
