Heritage, Freedom wrap up regular season The Heritage and Freedom high girls soccer teams finished one-two in the Bay Valley Athletic League standings. The Patriots ended the regular season with a 7-1-2 mark in BVAL play, beating Antioch and Liberty in the final week to win its second league title in three years. Freedom (6-0-4) took second in the BVAL and hasn't lost a game since Dec. 28. The Falcons were the No. 12 seed for the North Coast Section playoffs and faced No. 5 Amador Valley on Feb. 13, after this newspaper went to press. Heritage was the No. 11 seed and faced No. 6 College Park, also on Feb. 13.

Deer Valley suffers first BVAL loss On Feb. 5, the Heritage boys basketball team handed Deer Valley a 93-80 loss, the Wolverines' first in the BVAL this season. In the second half, Heritage shot 24 of 27 at the free throw line and held off the Wolverines with solid defense and sound fundamentals. Entering this week, Heritage was 6-2 in the BVAL and Deer Valley was 7-1. -- Nick Roth
Pittsburg wins BVAL The Pittsburg boys soccer team won the BVAL championship, finishing the regular season with a 6-1-3 record in league play. Throughout the season, the Pirates averaged 2.8 goals per game and led the league with 59 goals scored.

On deck Yuba at Los Medanos, men's basketball, Feb. 15, 7 p.m. -- After an 83-71 loss to Contra Costa, Los Medanos looks to get back in the win column when it hosts Yuba in a Bay Valley Conference game. Irvington at Freedom, baseball, Feb. 20, 3:30 p.m. -- After a disappointing 2012 campaign, Freedom kicks off the season against Irvington on Feb. 20. Last year, Freedom and Irvington battled to a 14-14 draw to start the season.
Stars of the week Pierre Carter, Heritage, boys basketball -- Carter had a game-high 31 points, including a 12 for 12 showing at the free throw line, in a 93-80 win over Deer Valley on Feb. 5. Sabrina Englestad, Heritage, girls basketball -- Englestad logged a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds, in a 51-46 win over Deer Valley on Feb. 5. Demi Gonis, Heritage, girls soccer -- Gonis scored a goal and had an assist in a 2-1 win over Liberty on Feb. 7 to secure the BVAL title for the Patriots.
