Deer Valley wins NCS Division I title

  • The Deer Valley High boys basketball team (24-5) won the North Coast Section Division I Championship, defeating San Leandro 73-65 in the title game on March 1. The victory helped the Wolverines earn a first-round bye in the CIF Northern California Division I playoffs, where they will play either Freedom or Bella Vista on March 9. In the Feb. 27 semifinals, Deer Valley outlasted the defending Division I champions, De La Salle, 51-48.

    Heritage falls short in NCS Division I finals

  • The Heritage High girls basketball team (24-5) defeated San Ramon Valley and Berkeley before falling to Monte Vista 50-42 in the NCS Division I Championship game March 1. Heritage played San Benito in the first round of the Northern California Division I Championship on March 6, after this newspaper went to press.

  • Freedom/Bella Vista at Deer Valley, boys basketball, March 9, 6 p.m. -- Deer Valley awaits the winner of the first round game of the NorCal Division I playoffs. The Wolverines defeated Freedom twice in Bay Valley Athletic League play.

  • Queen of the Mountain, softball, March 14-16 -- Heritage will test its skills against some of the best softball teams in the area when they travel to Pleasanton for the Queen of the Mountain Tournament. Last season, Heritage won the Division I title and went undefeated (10-0) in Bay Valley Athletic League play.

  • Deer Valley at Folsom, baseball, March 11, 3:30 p.m. — Deer Valley has jumped out to a strong start and looks to remain undefeated as it takes on Folsom in their third nonleague contest of the season.

  • Erin Asher, Heritage, girls basketball -- Asher led Heritage to the NCS Division I championship game against Monte Vista, and was also named MVP of the Bay Valley Athletic League for the 2012-13 season.

  • Marcus Lee, Deer Valley, boys basketball -- Lee had 22 points, 17 rebounds and nine blocks en route to a 73-63 victory over San Leandro in the NCS Division I Championship on March 1. Lee was also named Most Valuable Player of the Bay Valley Athletic League for the 2012-13 season.

  • Joey Lingenfelter, Deer Valley, baseball -- Lingenfelter had a walk-off RBI single in a 3-2 victory over Salinas on March 2.
