Deer Valley volleyball wins a thriller

  • In a match between the top two boys volleyball teams in the East Bay, Deer Valley traveled to Moraga on March 21 and defeated Campolindo 22-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-13, 15-13. Deer Valley's Marcus Lee and Jordan Ewert combined for 38 kills in the victory, which improved the Wolverines' record to 7-1. Campolindo fell to 8-1.

    Freedom looks dominant early

  • The Freedom softball team has jumped out to a 3-0 start in the 2013 campaign, as the Falcons have defeated San Leandro, Dougherty Valley and Benicia by a combined score of 28-1. Senior Maddy Williams has pitched three complete games for Freedom, allowing just one run in 19 innings.

    Wolverines off to a hot start

  • The Deer Valley baseball team started the season with six consecutive wins. The Wolverines scored 47 runs in their first seven games and allowed just 16. Jordan Rohrberg-Gough, Jesse Tamelier and Tyler Vistalli each have batting averages over .400 and have combined for 22 hits and 16 RBIs.

  • Stanford Invitational, track and field, March 29-30, Stanford -- A number of East Bay teams have entrants in this elite invitational. The first high school event starts at 1:50 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

    Stars of the week

  • Maddie Williams, Freedom softball -- Williams has been near perfect so far this season as she has pitched three complete games and has allowed just one run on six hits in 19 innings of work. She has also struck out 29 batters and has a 0.37 ERA. At the plate, she has a .600 batting average and has driven in three runs.

  • Jordan-Rohrberg Gough, Deer Valley baseball -- Gough had two doubles and drove in four runs in Deer Valley's first two games at the Boros Classic on March 25. He also earned an extra-innings victory, pitching four innings and allowing no runs in an 8-6 win over Pioneer.

  • Mitchell Zamora, Liberty baseball -- Zamora hurled a complete game three-hitter and allowed just one run in a 2-1 victory over Tokay-Lodi on March 23 in the East Bay vs. San Joaquin Showdown. Offensively, Zamora went 2 for 3 and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.
