Wolverines continue red-hot start

  • Jordan Ewert had 12 kills and Marcus Lee had five kills and five blocks to lead the Deer Valley High boys volleyball team past Clovis 25-21, 31-29 in the championship match of the Granite Bay Invitational on April 6. Derrico Kwa had 23 assists for the Wolverines, which won six matches in the tournament and entered this week with a 20-1 record. Kwa and Lee were named to the all-tournament team and Ewert was named the tournament's most valuable player. Deer Valley advanced to the championships with a 25-20, 19-25, 15-12 win over Whitney-Rocklin. Ewert and Lee combined for 23 kills and Kwa had 27 assists.

    Falcons take 10th at Stampede

  • The Freedom High softball team recovered from a slow start to finish 10th at the Livermore Stampede from April 4-6 at Robertson Park. The Falcons lost to Monte Vista and Alhambra in pool play to open the tournament before they beat Granada 10-1. Freedom then beat Rodriguez-Fairfield 8-6 to advance to the ninth place game, where it lost to Castro Valley.

  • San Ramon Valley Invitational, boys volleyball, April 13, all day -- Some of the area's top teams will be showcased at San Ramon Valley High in Danville.

  • Freedom Invitational, boys golf, April 15, 4 p.m. -- Freedom High hosts its annual invitational next week at Shadow Lakes Golf Club in Brentwood. The event begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

  • Jamal Chtaini, Deer Valley baseball -- Went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI to help the Wolverines beat St. Bonaventure 7-6 in the semifinals of the Righetti Spring Classic in Santa Maria.

  • Christopher Davis, Liberty boys track and field -- Davis won the long jump and the triple jump as the Lions beat Freedom 66-65 in a BVAL dual meet.

  • Jordan Ewert, Deer Valley volleyball -- Had a combined 27 kills for the Wolverines in their semifinal and final wins over Whitney and Clovis at the Granite Bay Invitational, where he was named the tournament's MVP.

  • Lyvie Ilayan, Freedom softball -- Scored five runs and had six RBIs in five games for the Falcons at the Livermore Stampede, where she was named to the All-Tournament team.

  • Ronjane'e Lillard, Freedom girls track and field -- The junior won the 100 and 200 meters as the Falcons beat Liberty 75-61 in a Bay Valley Athletic League dual meet
