Freedom puts together five in a row

  • The Freedom High baseball team has the best nonleague record (10-4) of any Bay Valley Athletic League team and carried the momentum of its five-game win streak into league play with a 17-3 win over Pittsburg on April 16. In their 14 nonleague games, the Falcons offense scored 87 runs and allowed just 45. Their pitchers have combined for 123 strikeouts and a 2.39 ERA.

    Los Medanos back in the win the column

  • After three consecutive loses, the Los Medanos College baseball team (12-7) rebounded with a 13-3 win over Napa on April 11. The Mustang offense got back on track with eight extra base hits. Pitcher Peter Nyznyk went the distance, allowing three earned runs with five strikeouts as he raised his record to 5-3.

    Antioch softball off to strong start

  • The BVAL softball standings are full of parity this season as several teams have an opportunity to win the league title. That includes Antioch, which is off to a 8-7 start. At its won HASA Tournament, Antioch went 3-1 and defeated Rancho Cotate 3-2 with two-run sixth inning. Starting pitcher Shelbi Graifman (8-5) went six innings and held Rancho Cotate to just one earned run.

  • Mendocino at Los Medanos, baseball, April 20, 1 p.m. -- With only three games remaining in the regular season, Los Medanos (12-7) looks to strengthen its bid for the playoffs when it faces Mendocino (13-6), which entered the week in second place in the Bay Valley Conference standings.

  • Freedom at Heritage, baseball, April 23, 7 p.m. -- The Falcons travel to Brentwood to face the Patriots in an early-season BVAL test for both teams.

  • Freedom at Heritage, softball, April 23, 4 p.m. -- Heritage, the defending BVAL champions, host Freedom, which went 7-5-1 in nonleague play.

    Stars of the week

  • Shelbi Graifman, Antioch, softball -- Graifman led the Panthers to a 3-1 record at the HASA Tournament. At the plate, Graifman went 5 for 10 including two doubles, four runs and one RBI in the tournament.

  • Peter Nyznyk, Los Medanos, baseball -- Nyznyk led the Mustangs to a much-needed win over Napa on April 11, and also leads the BVC with 63 strikeouts.

  • Mason Sargent, Heritage, baseball -- Sargent went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead Heritage to a 9-4 win over Petaluma on April 10.

  • Joe Starick, Freedom, baseball -- Starick went a combined 5 for 5 in wins over Deer Valley and Pittsburg on April 9 and April 10, respectively.

  • Mitchell Zamora, Liberty, baseball -- Zamora pitched a complete game shutout and earned his fourth win of the season against Northgate on April 2. In the 2-0 victory, Zamora gave up five hits, struck out 10 and allowed no walks. As of April 16, Zamora had a 5-0 record and a 0.87 ERA
