Mustangs nearly pull off upset

  • The Los Medanos College baseball team almost knocked off Santa Rosa in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association state playoffs May 3 and 4. In the best of three series, the Mustangs won the first game 5-3, but the Bear Cubs, ranked No. 1 in Northern California, won the second game 4-2 in 11 innings and the third game 5-4. In the third game, Kelly Starnes and Christian Kaplan each had two hits. Kaplan and Ryan Lacy each had two RBI as well. Santa Rosa moves on to the Super Regionals, where it will face Solano in the first round on May 10.

    Falcons stay perfect in BVAL

  • The Freedom High softball team appears to be hitting its stride at just the right time. The Falcons beat Deer Valley 9-1 on April 30 and Pittsburg 3-1 on May 2 to improve to 6-0 in the Bay Valley Athletic League. Freedom had four league games left to play entering this week and had a two-game lead over both Liberty and Heritage.

    Title march starts for Wolverines

  • The Deer Valley High boys volleyball team received the No. 1 seed for the North Coast Section Division I playoffs and will host either No. 8 De La Salle or No. 9 Monte Vista on May 10 at 7 p.m. The Wolverines finished the regular season with a remarkable 37-1 record and a 10-0 mark in the BVAL. Deer Valley, which has never won a section title in boys volleyball, was the No. 2 seed last season and advanced to the semifinals before it lost to Mission San Jose. De La Salle is the two-time defending champion.

  • BVAL championships, boys and girls swimming, May 11, 9 a.m. -- The BVAL's best swimmers will gather at Heritage High in Brentwood for the league championships.

  • NCS tournament of champions, boys golf, May 13, 8 a.m. -- A section champion will be crowned at the Rooster Run Golf Course in Petaluma. Teams and individuals will also try to qualify for the NorCal championships.

    Stars of the week

  • Christian Kaplan, Los Medanos College baseball -- Had two hits and two RBI for the Mustangs in their 5-4 loss to Santa Rosa in the third and deciding game of the CCCAA opening-round playoff series.

  • Marcus Lee, Deer Valley boys volleyball -- Lee had eight kills, three blocks and three digs to help the Wolverines beat Heritage 25-10, 25-17, 25-20 and finish the regular season with a 37-1 overall record.

  • Chris Williams, De La Salle baseball -- Williams enjoyed a monster week at the plate as the Spartans went 2-1. He hit two homers, including a game-winning grand slam against Monte Vista and a solo shot against Edison-Fresno at the Oakland Coliseum. He had two RBI in a loss to Amador Valley and six RBI and three runs against Monte Vista.
