Deer Valley girls take BVAL track title

  • In the closest title race in league history, the Deer Valley High girls track and field team edged host Heritage 135-134 at the May 11 league championships. For the Wolverines, Briana Guillory won the 100 meters (12.20 seconds) and the 200 (24.85), and Sasha Newman won the 100 hurdles (15.34) and the 300 hurdles in 44.28 seconds, a new league record. Newman and Guillory also ran legs in the victorious 4x400 relay team, which finished in 3:53.56, also a new league record. Heritage's overall team depth carried it to a second place finish, but Sydney Berry with a long jump with a mark of 18 feet.

    Patriots sweep BVAL swimming titles

  • The Heritage High boys and girls swim teams won nearly every event at the BVAL championships May 11 at Heritage High. Double winners for the Patriots included Brandon James (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke), Ryan Barsanti (500 and 100 freestyle), Stephanie Vosicka (200 and 500 freestyle) and Haley Rose Love (50 and 100 freestyle). The Heritage girls team finished with 639 points to 369 for second place Freedom. The Patriots boys team had 583 points to 344 for Liberty.

  • NCS championships, swimming, May 17-18, 10 a.m. -- The two-day meet, with preliminaries on the 17th and finals on the 18th, will be the final high school meet for an outstanding class of seniors across Contra Costa County.

  • NCS Tri-Valley area championships, track and field, May 18, 8:30 a.m. -- The area's best track and field athletes convene at Granada High with hopes of qualifying for next weekend's Meet of Champions.

  • NCS seeding meeting, baseball and softball, May 19, 9 a.m. -- Baseball and softball teams will learn their postseason seeding. Brackets will be available on the NCS website at cifncs.org in the afternoon.

  • Brandon James, Heritage swimming -- James won the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke at the BVAL swim championships.

  • Sasha Newman, Deer Valley track and field -- Newman won the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles at the BVAL championships. Her time in the 300 hurdles (44.28) set a new meet record. She also helped the 1,600 meter relay team set a new meet record.

  • Emily To'o, Freedom swimming -- To'o won the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly at the BVAL championships.

  • Stephanie Vosicka, Heritage swimming -- Vosicka won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle at the BVAL swim championships.
