Deer Valley girls win NCS Tri-Valley meet

  • The Deer Valley High girls track and field team took first place at the North Coast Section Tri-Valley Area championships May 18 at Granada High, winning five events to finish with a team score of 84. Briana Guillory won the 100 meters (12.35 seconds), LaShall Hamlin won the 200 (25.00) and Sasha Newman won the 300 hurdles in a meet record time of 44.22 seconds. The Wolverines also won the 400 relay (47.95) and the 1,600 relay (3:57.74).

    Heritage takes 7th in NCS swimming

  • The Heritage High boys swim team took seventh at the NCS championships May 17 and 18 at Concord Community Pool. Senior Ryan Barsanti won the 100-yard freestyle (45.07 seconds), took second in the 50 freestyle (20.68) and helped the 200 freestyle relay team take fourth (1:25.21). Brandon James was fourth in the 200 individual medley (1:52.95) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (49.89).

    Logjam at the top in BVAL baseball

  • A crazy final week of baseball in the Bay Valley Athletic League left three teams tied for first place as Deer Valley, Heritage and Liberty were all crowned co-champions. Liberty entered the final day of the regular season, May 16, with a one game lead over Heritage, Deer Valley and Freedom. But the Lions lost to Heritage 12-2 and Deer Valley beat Freedom 11-3 to create a three way tie for the top spot. Deer Valley, by virtue of beating both Liberty and Heritage in the second half of the league season, earned the league's automatic berth to this week's NCS playoffs.

  • NCS Meet of Champions, track and field, May 24-25, 9:30 a.m. -- Section champions and state qualifiers will be decided at Cal's Edwards Stadium. Field event finals begin at 9:30 a.m. on May 24. Track finals start at 1:30 p.m. on the 25th.

  • De La Salle vs. Dougherty Valley/Freedom, baseball, May 24, 4 p.m. -- With the No. 2 seed in the NCS Division I playoffs, De La Salle gets a first round bye and faces either Dougherty Valley or Freedom in the quarterfinals.

  • Derrico Kwa, Deer Valley boys volleyball -- The senior setter had 48 assists and nine kills to lead the Wolverines to a 25-15, 24-26, 25-16, 25-15 win over Amador Valley in the NCS Division I championship match on May 17.

  • Sasha Newman, Deer Valley girls track and field -- Newman won the 300 hurdles in a meet record time of 44.22 seconds at the NCS Tri-Valley Area championships at Granada. She also took second in the 100 hurdles (15.04).
