BVAL girls track stars shine at NCS

  • Several Bay Valley Athletic League track and field athletes competed at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley from May 24-25, and a handful advanced to the state championships May 31-June 1 at Buchanan High in Clovis. The Deer Valley girls took fifth in the team standings with 30 points, as LaShall Hamlin took second in the 200 meters (25.11 seconds), Briana Guillory was third in the 100 (12.63) and the Wolverines' 400-meter relay team also took third (47.87). Freedom's Mariah Walker was second in the 300 hurdles (44.88) and Pittsburg's Tyra Lassair was third in the discus (122 feet, 1 inch) and second in the shot put (38-9).

    BVAL boys track stars qualify for state

  • Several BVAL boys track and field athletes qualified for the CIF state championships in Clovis with their performances at the NCS Meet of Champions. In an extremely fast 400 meters race, Heritage's Frank Kurtz took third (47.65). Kurtz, along with Carter Blaise, Travon Covington and D'Maree Lewis, also helped the 400-meter relay team qualify as the Patriots took third with a time of 42.27 seconds. Deer Valley's LaVelle Hamlin took third in the 300 hurdles (38.78) and Liberty's Clint Bishop was third in the pole vault (13-9).

    Freedom advances to NCS semifinals

  • The Freedom softball team advanced to the NCS Division I semifinals with a 6-5 win over Castro Valley on May 24. Trailing by two, the Falcons scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, using two errors and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Senior Niki Kaleialii tied the game with a two-run double, and the Falcons took the lead on Madison Williams' ground ball to second base. The Falcons hosted San Ramon Valley in the semifinals on May 29, after this newspaper went to press.

  • CIF state championships, track and field, May 31-June 1 -- Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis serves as the site of the state championships. Qualifying begins at 3 p.m. on Friday and running finals start at 6 p.m. Saturday. Field finals are at 4:30 p.m.

    Stars of the week

  • Niki Kaleialii, Freedom softball -- With the bases loaded in the seventh inning against San Ramon Valley, Kaleiali hit a two-run double to tie the game at 4-4. Freedom would win 6-5.

  • Derrico Kwa, Deer Valley boys volleyball -- Kwa, a senior, had 37 assists for the Wolverines in their three game loss to Archbishop Mitty-San Jose in the Northern California Division I championship match on May 25.

  • LaShall Hamlin, Deer Valley girls track and field -- Hamlin was second in the 200 meters (25.11) at the NCS Meet of Champions.
