Liberty baseball secures BVAL title

  • The Liberty High baseball team captured its first outright Bay Valley Athletic League title in at least 20 years with a 5-4 win over Freedom on May 15. The Lions led 4-0 going into the top of the seventh inning, but that's when the Falcons rallied to tie the score. In the bottom of the seventh, Liberty scored the winning run on Domnic Smith's RBI walk-off sacrifice fly. Smith finished the game 2 for 2 with two runs scored as Liberty won its fifth straight game. The Lions earned the No. 7 seed for the North Coast Section Division I playoffs and hosted No. 10 Heritage in the first round on May 21, after this newspaper went to press. Deer Valley and Pittsburg also made the Division I playoffs. No. 11 Deer Valley played at No. 6 Foothill on May 20 and No. 16 Pittsburg played at No. 1 San Ramon Valley on May 21.

    Heritage softball perfect in BVAL

  • The Heritage softball team wrapped up a 10-0 record in BVAL play with a 3-2 victory over Antioch on May 16. The Patriots went 18-4 during the regular season and earned the No. 4 seed for the NCS Division I playoffs. Heritage opened the postseason on May 21 at home against Berkeley. In other May 21 playoff games, No. 9 Freedom played at No. 8 Castro Valley and No. 11 Liberty played at No. 6 Santa Rosa.

    Deer Valley looks for another repeat

  • After winning the BVAL league title with a 10-0 record, the Deer Valley boys volleyball team earned a first-round bye in the NCS Division I playoffs. In its first playoff match, Deer Valley (37-2) defeated College Park 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 and moved on to host De La Salle (22-5) in the semifinals on May 21. Last season, the Wolverines also went undefeated in BVAL play and also went on to win the NCS Division I title.

  • NCS Tri-Valley Area meet, track and field, May 23-24 -- The BVAL's best track and field will travel to Amador Valley in Pleasanton for the Tri-Valley Area meet, with spots at the NCS Meet of Champions at stake.

  • Jordan Ewert, Deer Valley volleyball -- Ewert led the Wolverines to a second round victory over College Park with 17 kills, 5 aces, and 9 digs.

  • Brandon James, Heritage boys swimming -- James, a senior, took second in the 100-yard backstroke at the NCS swimming championships with a time of 49.10 seconds. He also helped the Patriots take second in the 200 freestyle relay and third in the 200 medley relay.

  • Tyra Lassair, Pittsburg track and field -- Lassair won the girls shot put and discus at the BVAL track and field championships at Pittsburg High.

  • Domnic Smith, Liberty baseball -- Smith went 2 for 2 and scored two runs, and alos drove in the game-winning run for Liberty in its 5-4 win over Freedom.
