Deer Valley reaches NorCal semis

  • After winning the NCS Division I final for a second consecutive year, the Deer Valley boys volleyball team advanced to the second round of the NorCal Division I playoffs. The Wolverines defeated Lowell-San Francisco 25-9, 25-16, 25-15 in the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals to St. Francis-Mountain View 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 in the semifinals. Standout players Jordan Ewert and Bezhan Wahidi combined for 53 kills and 24 digs in the two NorCal playoff matches. The Wolverines finished the season with a 40-3 overall record.

    Ex-Deer Valley star advances in NCAAs

  • Deer Valley High graduate Hammed Suleman placed seventh in the long jump at the NCAA championships West Prelims in Fayetteville, Ark. on May 29. Competing for Cal, Suleman had a leap of 25 feet, qualifying him for the NCAA championships in Eugene, Ore. on June 11-14. Suleman came just a half-inch shy of his legal season best. Just two weeks ago, he flew to a wind-aided jump of 26-0.25 to claim his second consecutive Pac-12 championship.

    Liberty tops Heritage in NCS playoffs

  • After securing its first Bay Valley Athletic League title in at least 20 years, the Liberty Lions baseball team defeated Heritage 4-1 in the first round of the NCS playoffs. Cody Luther earned Player of the Game honors and picked up the win after hurling 62/3 innings while allowing just one run with five strikeouts. Luther also helped his own cause at the plate going 2 for 2 with a double and a run. The Lions eventually lost to De La Salle 14-1 in the second round and finished the season with a 14-12 record.

  • CIF state championships, track and field, June 6-7 -- The high school athletic year will come to a close for East Bay athletes at the state track and field meet at Clovis' Veterans Memorial Stadium. Finals in field events begin at 4:30 p.m. on June 7 with running events slated to begin at 6 p.m.

    Stars of the week

  • Marissa Espinoza, Heritage, softball -- Espinoza was a huge factor in the Patriots success this season, finishing the year with 12 wins, 86 innings pitched and a 1.62 ERA.

  • Jordan Ewert, Deer Valley, volleyball -- Ewert led the Wolverines to their second consecutive NCS Division I title then racked up 30 kills and 15 digs in two NorCal playoff matches.

  • Bezhan Wahidi, Deer Valley, volleyball -- Wahidi was a big factor in Deer Valley's second consecutive 40-win season. Wahidi was responsible for 23 kills and nine digs in two NorCal playoff games.
