Gasoline prices appear to have reached their first plateau in the Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco metro areas after the disastrous Aug. 6 fire that knocked out a crude distillation unit at the Chevron refinery in Richmond.
Bay Area gas prices averaged about $4.16 a gallon Monday, essentially unchanged from a week ago as well as from Sunday, according to information compiled from the online site GasBuddy.
Gasoline prices averaged $4.12 a gallon in the East Bay, $4.14 in the South Bay and an average of $4.22 a gallon in the San Francisco region. Compared with a week ago, East Bay and South Bay prices each were up 1 cent, while San Francisco prices were down 1 cent.
The Bay Area's highest price reported for gasoline was at a station in San Bruno at 717 San Bruno Ave. E and Sixth Avenue that was charging $4.89 a gallon for cash-only purchases and $4.99 for credit card buys. The lowest price in the nine-county region was an Antioch station at 507 East 18th St. and Cavallo Road that was charging $3.91.
