SAN JOSE -- A series of propane tank explosions from a homeless encampment near the Los Lagos Golf Course ignited a brush fire that jumped across six lanes of Capitol Expressway and burned eight to 10 acres before it was contained by fire crews Saturday night.

There were no injuries. Some structures near Tuers Road in East San Jose were threatened by the blaze, but none was damaged, said San Jose Fire Capt. Reggie Williams.

Firefighters responded to the first of several calls that began at 4:30 p.m. and had the fire under control by 6:09 p.m., Williams said.

It appeared to start at a homeless encampment in a canal near the golf course when "several more than five propane tanks" exploded, Williams said.

Winds drove the fire across Capitol Expressway, where Cal Fire crews brought in a helicopter and helped San Jose firefighters control the blaze.
