Japanese fashion retailer Uniqlo will open three new stores in the Bay Area beginning this spring as part of its rapid California expansion.
Uniqlo, known for its high-tech and casual styles of men's and women's fashion, will open stores in the Serramonte Center in Daly City, Sunvalley Shopping Center in Concord and the Great Mall of the Bay Area in Milpitas. The Bay Area gets three of the retailer's five new stores that it plans to open during the first half of the year -- the other two locations will open on the East Coast.
Uniqlo, which is part of Japan-based Fast Retailing Group, the world's fourth-largest apparel retail company, says it will open 20 to 30 stores a year in the U.S. through 2020. The retailer added four new stores in the Bay Area at the end of last year, most recently at Bay Street in Emeryville.
Uniqlo has become popular by quickly turning high-fashion trends into mass-market goods and keeping prices consistently lower than many competitors but not offering big promotions or sales. The company works with Japanese designers and engineers to create ultra-warm and quick-dry fabrics that insulate without making clothes heavy or bulky. A Uniqlo down vest, for instance, weighs less than 3 ounces.
