Ecologic Brands, an Oakland-based company that designs and makes bottles from recycled material, has started making wine bottles from paper.

The paper wine bottles are made completely from recycled cardboard in the shape of a standard Bordeaux wine bottle and are 85 percent lighter than glass bottles. The bottles will be used by PaperBoy Wine, which sells wines sourced from Mendocino and Paso Robles. Ecologic will produce the wine bottles in its 60,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Manteca, which the company opened last year.

Truett-Hurst Inc creates the first paper wine bottle, called Paper Boy, which will debut in Safeway stores.
