HAYWARD -- Jason Hinton ran wild against the host Monarchs' defense and the Mariners forced a late turnover to come away with a thrilling nonleague win over host Mt. Eden.
Hinton rushed for 343 yards on 28 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 54, 20, 24, 60 and 75 yards. The junior also scored on a 90-yard kickoff return early in the third quarter. Hinton's 75-yard touchdown gave Moreau (3-0) the lead for good with 3:56 remaining.
After Giovanni Remmen returned the ensuing kickoff to the Mariners 16, Mt. Eden was facing a third-and-20 situation from the Moreau 26 when Rian Goulart recovered a fumble for the Mariners with 2:10 left and Moreau ran out the clock.
Monarchs quarterback Jonathan Sturholm had a huge day as he rallied Mt. Eden from a 14-point second half deficit, throwing for 272 yards and four touchdowns on 14 for 20 passing. Sturholm's 19-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Williams gave Mt. Eden (1-2) a 43-42 lead with 4:19 before Hinton rallied the Mariners.
Remmen scored three touchdowns for Mt. Eden, including a 86-yard kickoff return in the first quarter as Moreau took a 22-14 lead after one.
Moreau junior quarterback Lucas O'Rourke threw for 131 yards on 13 for 23 passing and connected with seven different receivers. He added a touchdown on the ground.
