Pittsburg wins big test over Deer Valley Despite an injury to star running back Harris Ross, the Pittsburg High football team beat previously undefeated Deer Valley 28-24 as Pirates running back Jaylyn Morgan scored late in the fourth quarter to give his team the lead. Deer Valley, which fell to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the Bay Valley Athletic League, had led for all of the second half. With the win, the Pirates improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the BVAL, and can clinch the league title outright with a win over rival Antioch in the Big Little Game on Nov. 8.

Liberty wins Brentwood Bowl Trailing 7-6 late in the game, the Liberty football team scored the eventual game-winning touchdown with 5:46 remaining on a two-yard touchdown run by Ivan Oseguera to defeat Heritage 14-7 on Nov. 1. Liberty (5-4, 2-2 BVAL) notched its first Brentwood Bowl victory over Heritage and also became playoff eligible for the first time since 2005.

Freedom outlasts Antioch in OT The Freedom football team jumped out to a 21-7 first half lead over Antioch on Nov. 1, but the game later went to overtime after a strong second half by Antioch. After a quick Freedom touchdown in overtime, Antioch responded with a touchdown of its own, but missed extra point which gave Freedom a 28-27 win.

On deck Antioch at Pittsburg, football, Nov. 8, 7 p.m. -- The Pirates need to beat the Panthers in the Big Little Game to secure the BVAL title outright. NCS quarterfinals, water polo, Nov. 9, TBA -- Action heats up in the NCS boys and girls water polo playoffs with spots in the semifinals at stake. The boys Division I tournament is especially intriguing. Yuba at Los Medanos, football, Nov. 9, 1 p.m. -- Los Medanos (5-3, 2-1 Bay Valley Conference) will host Yuba (3-5, 1-2) and try for its third consecutive win in conference play. NCS playoffs, girls volleyball, Nov. 13, TBA -- The first round of the North Coast Section girls volleyball playoff get underway.
Stars of the week Jaylyn Morgan, Pittsburg, football -- Morgan filled in for Harris Ross at running back and did a more than adequate job, rushing for 153 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns in Pittsburg's 28-24 win over Deer Valley. Ivan Oseguera, Liberty, football -- Oseguera threw for 94 yards and also ran in the go-ahead touchdown in Liberty's 14-7 victory over Heritage. Nsimba Webster, Deer Valley, football -- Webster provided most of the offense in Deer Valley's loss to Pittsburg. In the loss Webster ran for 156 yards including two touchdowns and also threw for 107 yards and one touchdown.
