Lions capture Holiday Classic

  • The Liberty High girls basketball team captured the championship of the Dons Holiday Classic with a 51-47 win over Fremont-Sunnyvale at Del Mar High in San Jose on Dec. 28. Jamesha Green had 26 points to lead the Lions as she was named the tournament's most valuable player. Kaily Bigley had 11 points in the win and Stefani Bergerhouse was named to the All-Tournament team. Liberty has now won nine of its last 11 games.

    Heatbreak for Heritage at Bambauer

  • The Heritage boys basketball team lost 67-66 to Glendora in the third round of the Bambauer Classic at Marin Catholic High in Kentfield on Dec. 28. Shon Briggs finished with 27 points for the Patriots and Marcus Wallace had five 3-pointers to finish with 15 points. Heritage wrapped up the Bambauer Classic on Dec. 30, after this newspaper went to press.

    Liberty continues strong start

  • The Liberty boys basketball team improved to 8-3 on the season with a 61-44 win over Elk Grove in the consolation final of the Enterprise Tournament on Dec. 28. Junior forward Logan Rodgers had 27 points and 17 rebounds in the victory and was named to the All-Tournament team. JP Puente added 11 points for Liberty, which outscored Elk Grove 33-16 in the second half.

  • Irvington at Freedom, boys soccer, Jan. 4, 12:30 p.m. -- The Falcons look to continue their strong start and prepare for the start of the Bay Valley Athletic League season when they host the Vikings in a nonleague game.

  • De La Salle at Doc Buchanan Invitational, wrestling, Jan. 2-4, 9 a.m. -- The Spartans travel to Clovis High to participate in one of the state's most prestigious wrestling tournaments.
