Liberty wrestling tops rival Freedom

  • The meet between the two heavyweights of Bay Valley Athletic League wrestling come down to a match between two of the league's most decorated wrestlers. Three-time North Coast Section placewinner Devin Lyle of Liberty controlled Freedom's Ricky Coster for a 4-1 victory at 138 pounds on Jan. 22 to secure the Lions' 31-29 dual match victory. The Falcons' Clint Fredenburg, at 126 pounds, and Tyler Bennett, at 132, set the stage for the finale. Fredenburg handled Niko Zanarini 3-0 to pull the Falcons within 28-26, then Bennett put them ahead 29-28 with a 10-4 victory over Johnny Zanarini. Brandon Spolous (220), Justin Hansz (145), Jesse Gregorson (152), Sergio Napoles (103), Bryar Edwards (113) and Tino Curiel (122) also won for the Lions.

    Heritage's Kurtz picks Stanford

  • Heritage senior track star Frank Kurtz orally committed to Stanford last month. "That was my No. 1 choice by far," said Kurtz, who also said that he also seriously considered Cal before choosing the Cardinal. Kurtz placed fourth in the 400 meters in the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championships last year with a time of 47.14 seconds.

    Heritage forfeits three victories

  • The Heritage boys basketball team had to forfeit nonleague wins over Armijo-Fairfield and Escalon and its Bay Valley Athletic League win over Liberty on Jan. 17 for use of an ineligible player, school athletic director and Patriots coach Pat Cruickshank said. Cruickshank said the player's ineligibility stemmed from paperwork issues.

  • Freedom at Heritage, boys basketball, Feb. 1, 5:30 p.m. -- The Patriots will try to slow down the first place Falcons when they meet in Brentwood for another key BVAL showdown.

  • Carondelet at Deer Valley, girls basketball, Feb. 2, 4 p.m. -- The Wolverines have been dominating its league foes so far this season but should get a stiff test when they host the Cougars in a nonleague clash between Contra Costa county powers.

  • Esteban Berumen, Pittsburg boys soccer -- Berumen scored two goals in the first half then added another just before the final whistle to lead the Pirates to a 4-0 nonleague win over Newark Memorial.

  • Miriam Issa, Deer Valley girls soccer -- Issa scored two first half goals to help the Wolverines beat crosstown rival Antioch 4-1 and improve to 3-1 in the BVAL.

  • Rodney Pope, Freedom boys basketball -- Pope scored 22 points to help Freedom top Liberty 79-53, as the Falcons improved to 2-0 in league play.
