Pittsburg win streak reaches 14

  • The Pittsburg High boys soccer team continue to control the Bay Valley Athletic League as it handed Antioch a 3-1 loss on Jan. 30. The victory was the 14th straight for the Pirates, who improved to 15-1-1 overall and 6-0 in the BVAL. The Pirates have outscored their last three opponents by a total of 14-2 and haven't lost a game since it fell 2-0 to Monte Vista on Dec. 9.

    Heritage remains unbeaten in BVAL

  • The Heritage girls basketball team improved to a perfect 4-0 in BVAL play after defeating Pittsburg 47-43 on Jan. 28 and Freedom 50-27 on Jan. 31. Against Freedom, the Patriots (12-8) took a 19-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

    Liberty climbing up the standings

  • The Liberty girls soccer team is hitting on all cylinders and has outscored their last five opponents by a combined total of 19-6. Liberty's stout defense has allowed one goal or less in all but two of their games this season. The Lions (8-2-5, 4-1-1) entered the week tied with Deer Valley for first place in BVAL play.

    Freedom soars past BVAL competition

  • The Freedom boys basketball team defeated Deer Valley 68-56 on Jan. 28 and Heritage 53-45 on Jan. 31 as its win streak reached nine entering this week. Freedom (16-4, 4-0 BVAL) hasn't lost since Dec. 28, a 66-61 loss to Campolindo.

  • Freedom at Liberty, boys basketball, Feb. 11, 7 p.m. -- Liberty (15-5, 3-1) hopes to even up the BVAL standings when they host the first place Falcons.

  • Liberty at Pittsburg, boys soccer, Feb. 11, 6 p.m. -- Pittsburg will host second place Liberty in the second to last game of BVAL play.

    Stars of the week

  • Sydney Berry, Heritage, girls basketball -- Berry scored a game-high 17 points in Pittsburg's 47-43 win over Pittsburg.

  • Rangel Lowry, Deer Valley, wrestling -- Lowry has dominated the 285-pound weight class this season and has perfect 23-0 record. After placing first in the Lou Bronzan, Bay Area 51, Mat Classic and Armijo Tournaments Lowry earned a rank of 20th in the state and third at NCS.

  • Rodney Pope, Freedom, boys basketball -- Pope led Freedom to a key victory over Heritage and led all scorer's with 16 points, including three 3-pointers.

  • Juan Venegas, Pittsburg, boys soccer -- Last week, goalie Venegas was a force in the box. In wins over Deer Valley and Antioch he stopped 17 shots while allowing just one goal.
