Los Medanos wins in extra innings

  • On Feb. 10, the Los Medanos College baseball team wrapped a three-game sweep over San Francisco City College with a thrilling 6-5 victory in 11 innings. Starting pitcher Ben Polansky struck out nine in 62/3 innings, and Matt Jacobson went 3 for 5 with two RBIs to lead the offense. In the two other meetings, the Mustangs (4-0) defeated San Francisco 12-6 on Feb. 6 and 5-0 on Feb. 4.

    Heritage tied for first in BVAL standings

  • After defeating Liberty 58-53 on Feb. 7 the Heritage boys basketball team moved into a first place tie with Freedom in the Bay Valley Athletic League standings. The Patriots (12-10, 5-1 BVAL) were led by Shon Briggs and Joseph Worku, who combined for 36 points. Heritage also notched a 70-58 victory over Deer Valley on Feb. 4 and have now won four of its last five BVAL games.

    Pittsburg upsets Freedom

  • On Feb. 7, the Pittsburg boys basketball team handed Freedom (17-5, 5-1) its first loss in BVAL play. In the 65-61 victory, Pittsburg was led by D.J. Kennedy who had a game-high 28 points. The Pirates have now won 13 of their last 15 contests and are now 17-5 overall and 4-2 in the BVAL.

  • NCS team duals, boys wrestling, Feb. 15, all day -- De La Salle is always a contender in the team duals, which kick off the wrestling postseason. Competition in Division I and Division II will be held at Dougherty Valley High.

  • NCS championships, girls wrestling, Feb. 15, all day -- The section's best girls wrestlers meet at Pittsburg High to determine NCS champions and state qualifiers.

  • NCS seeding meeting, soccer, Feb. 16, noon -- The North Coast Section tournament brackets in boys and girls soccer will be announced around midday at cifncs.org.

  • Heritage at Freedom, boys basketball, Feb. 18, 7 p.m. -- Two of the top teams in the BVAL will face off when Freedom hosts Heritage.

    Stars of the week

  • Wyatt Foreman, Los Medanos College, baseball -- The sophomore catcher hit a walk-off single over the center fielder's head in the 11th inning to lead the Mustang's over the Rams.

  • D.J. Kennedy, Pittsburg boys basketball -- Kennedy had a game-high 28 points in Pittsburg's 65-61 win over a previously unbeaten Freedom team.

  • Sierra Mixon, Deer Valley girls basketball -- Dixon led the Wolverines (17-5, 6-0) to a key 70-67 victory over Heritage on Feb. 7. Dixon led all scorers with 21 points including three three-pointer's and five rebounds.

  • Juan Venegas, Pittsburg boys soccer -- The Senior goalkeeper has been a huge factor in Pittsburg's success this season. Over the Pirates last five games, Venegas has recorded 38 saves while allowing just three goals.

  • Myeshia Ward, Los Medanos College women's basketball -- In Bay Valley Conference games against Merritt and Solano, Ward, a sophomore center, had a combined 41 points, going 15 of 21 from the field and 11 of 13 on free throw attempts, and 25 rebounds. Ward is a graduate of Pittsburg High.
