UNION CITY -- The host James Logan High girls basketball team (19-9) won their first NCS playoff game since 2011 with a key surge in the second quarter against the eighth-seeded Patriots (15-12) on the way to a 66-51 victory.

The ninth-seeded Colts trailed Heritage 25-24 with four minutes, 34 seconds left in the first quarter. But a layup by Sophia Leon started a 12-2 Colts run to end the half. James Logan never trailed after that in this Division I first-round game.

"We switched to man (defense). Our zone was a little off tonight," James Logan coach Cheri Craddock said. "(The win) is definitely big."

"I think we just turned up our intensity because we really wanted to win," said the Colts' Courtney Gooch, who scored a game-high 18 points, including nine in the first half, and also had 10 rebounds.

James Logan took a 44-33 lead with 3:18 left in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Monika Pedagat, and held a double-digit advantage the rest of the game.

The Colts had five players score eight points or more in the game, including 15 by Mariah Elzy. She also had a game-high 15 rebounds.

"We have a lot of shooters," Gooch said. "We can trust each other on the court."

The Colts led 20-13 early in the second quarter, but Heritage then went on a 12-4 run to take the lead before Logan answered back before halftime.

Heritage was paced in scoring by Sydney Berry with 16 points. Teammate Brittany Dryer added 12 points.

Logan's next opponent will be No. 1 seed Monte Vista (23-3). The Mustangs will host the quarterfinal game on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
